Seems like a lot of confusion here. Let me summarize what's necessary.
1. Exchange 2003 with OWA enabled. Try to connect to OWA from your phone's browser; if you can't, the mobile sync won't work either.
2. Forward the proper ports to the Exchange server. That would be 80 for unsecure access and 443 for secure/SSL/HTTPS access. This is configured on your Exchange server settings.
3. Configure the device with EXTERNAL DNS name of your Exchange server. Set the proper security option (SSL checked on or off to match the server settings), and enter your domain details.
4. Sync. If it works, you will be asked if you want to enable "push" mail. If you do, you need your device's e-mail address. Also you can set up each carrier's details on the server, then the device will have options to simply check your carrier and enter your number.
It really is that simple. If something fails, go back and check each step.
