From my experience, you should always start the wireless modem and hit "start" before you plug in the USB cable. This is because the cdma modem via usb does not load properly unless wireless modem has been started when you plug in the usb cable. For BT, although I don't necessary need to start the wireless modem first, I may not get a connection if I start dialing too soon after I start the wireless modem. Another important thing is to make sure you don't have an active data connection on the phone.
