USB Modem Instructions

How to Use Your i730 as a USB Modem

This set of instructions will help Windows XP users connect the i730 to a laptop or desktop through USB (either the cradle or aftermarket USB cable) and obtain Internet access through Verizon's Data Plans.

Note that if you do decide to use this it will charge you for the time based upon your current data plan, so if you "Pay as you Go", then you will be charged per KB, and remember using a computer allows a lot more items to be used, thus using more bandwidth. If you use the "Pay as you Go" plan, I would not suggest using this, also if you have the limited plan (10-20MB plan), then I would again recommend you not use this.

However the unlimited plan will not incure anything above your current price. Also note that Verizon does not provide support for this, nor do they condoan it.

Now since it comes up quite often, after you have done this hack your phone will stay in USB Modem mode, and you will NOT, I repeat NOT, be able to use ActiveSync until you change the phone back to ActiveSync Mode ("Internal Data Call"). So after you get finished online and wish to sync again, dial the **PATH, and switch back to "Internal Data Call". Then when you want to use the USB Modem again, you dial **PATH and choose "As the modem through USB". Also the YH25 version of the phone, and SD WM5 versions of the phone **PATH no longer works, it's now **UPATH. Also with SD WM5, there is a Data Connection shortcut in the Settings menu under the System Tab that does the same thing as **UPATH.

DO NOT HOOK UP THE PHONE TO THE COMPUTER UNTIL PROMPTED.

Download the driver software from Samsungs web site directly. Or click here to get it as a ZIP file without having to use Samsungs Extraction program.

Double click on the file you DL from Samsungs web site (icon looks like an egg)

You will see a dialog box that has a bunch of buttons with question marks on them.

Click the bottom left button. This extracts the installation files to a folder. Ignore the error messages by clicking the Ok button.

Go into the folder it creates.

Double click on setup.exe and go through the installation.

On your i730 bring up the phone dialer and enter **PATH (**7284).

On the following screen click As the modem through USB.

Now plug in the i730 to your computer with the supplied USB cable.
After the modem is detected you should see it in the device manager as SAMSUNG CDMA Modem.

Go to Network Connections and click Create a new connection.

Click Next on the New Connection Wizard.

Select Connect to the Internet and click Next.

Select Set up my connection manually and click Next.

Select Connect using a dial-up modem and click Next

Type in a name for your ISP and click Next. I used VerizonWireless.

For the phone number enter #777 and click Next.

For the username put in your ten digit mobile phone number before the @vzw3g.com.
Password is vzw.
It is helpful to save the username and password so check off the first selection box.
I chose not to make this my default internet connection so I did not check the second selection box.
Click Next

Click on Finish

Now bring up the VerizonWireless (if that is what you named it) connect window. If you chose to make a shortcut on your desktop you can double click that to bring it up. It will be in the Network Connections folder as well. Click Dial.

You will see the connection being established.

If everything goes well you will see the following ballon window.

Double clicking on the connection will bring up the Status window. You may disconnect by clicking on the Disconnect button.
