You might want to look at what slashdot.org has done with user-support. They sell subscriptions as #of ad free views, rather then time limited subscriptions. This way, light users can pay less for an ad free experience then heavy users. I believe the idea was to be proportinate to the lost revenue of not showing adds to those users. They too have very stringent ad standards so free users are not overwelmed by innapropriate or overpowering ads.
